Team Captain Ramón Madan fills in the details of the National Championship:

It was hard marathon tourney, with every match a difficult battle with come-from-behind victories against some excellent opponents, but the squad team came together at the right time to pull out some tough, well-deserved wins. It seemed that in the opening round, we played the best that the state of Texas had to offer, but in the end the Commonwealth of Virginia prevailed. Our first match was against TNT-WSA of South Texas. Despite giving up an early goal, the Fado Irish Pub/Conquistadores came back to end with a 2-1 win. The following game against saw another dramatic come from behind victory against the North Texas Shooters. Despite being 2-0 down in the first 10 minutes of the game, the Fado squad pulled it together with an incredible team effort and an incredible GOLAZO by Conquistadores team Co-Captain, Wendy Latimer to achieve an incredible 4-3 victory. The next morning, the squad faced another determined North Texas squad, the Killer Ducks and secured well deserved 3-2 win. The final match had the Fado/Conquistadores facing the Challengers of Houston needing a victory or tie to secure a place in the semis. A 1-1 tie was the outcome as fatigue began to take its toll on both teams. Once in the semi-final round, the Conquistadores faced a very skilled Ann Arbor squad from Michigan. Despite playing short after losing 2 male players to ejection in regular time, the Ann Arbor team proved a tenaciously defensive adversary that thwarted all of the Conquistadore’s scoring chances. This stifling defense took the game into the 2 mandatory 10 minute overtime periods. In the first overtime, the Conquistadore’s secured a goal on a PK, followed by another PK in the second round to win the match 2-0 and a place in the final. In the Championship, the Fado/Conquistadores faced their old nemesis from last year’s Championship final, Serrano’s Salsa Co. of Louisiana. Despite the exhaustion of having played 5 + games in the previous 2 days, the Conquistadores were fired up and determined to work hard to defend their title. In what was a pretty even match, the 2 teams played some beautiful, skillful and energetic soccer. A break in the scoreline came late in the first half when one of the Conquistadore ladies was cut down in the box and the resulting PK was converted. This lead was not to last long as early the 2nd half Serrano’s came back to tie the match. Battling on, it was fitting that late in the second half, Conquistadore’s game winning goal was scored by Co-Captain Hugh Paquette on a beautiful 20-yard strike in the upper 90 that the Serrano’s keeper had little chance to reach. Defending this lead had the team defending their National Title to repeat as USASA Open Co-Ed Cup Champions.

The Championship title and final match capped off an incredible tourney for the Fado Irish Pub/Conquistadores squad, where team-work was the key to the team’s wins. In spite of being down early in many of the matches, the team found a way to overcome both adversity and determined and skilled opponents, to win. With everyone on the Conquistadore squad playing for each other, and with every game revealing a new hero, this success is truly due to the team effort that, fortunately, with heart and hard work, led to a second National Championship.

. . . And as if one title wasn't good enough, Team Captain Wolf Antoni gives a rundown of the Hot Pink Panthers of Virginia's Coed Sports & Recreation Association taking the Over-30 title!:

As of last Sunday [09/30/01] afternoon, our very own Hot Pink Panthers are the proud (and beaten up) Over-30 National Coed Cup Champions. In a grueling three-day tournament in Dallas, the Hot Pink Panthers lost their first game 0:2 (against Express). This early loss was followed by 1:1 (against Olympia I) and 7:0 (against Black Hawk) wins in the other two preliminary games. On Sunday morning, the Hot Pink Panthers clinched a place in the final with a 2:0 win over the Killer Ducks. The final was played against Express (a first round opponent) . After a tough game and a scoreless tie in regulation and the first 15 minute overtime period, Nelson Rodriguez scored about 7 minutes into the second overtime period. The final minutes went by as slow as hell, but as the final whistle blew, the Hot Pink Panthers went straight into Seventh Heaven. We not only won for ourselves, but also for our league and our state association!
